Learning Opportunities

Dear Educators,

Welcome to the 2011-2012 Norton Center Student Matinee Series. This year’s theme for the entire Norton Center season is REIMAGINE. When selecting the visiting artists to participate in the school matinee programs we definitely kept the theme in mind. The overall matinee schedule provides educators and students a performing arts journey into global cultures and history; from Japanese drummers, to the Lincoln-Douglas slavery debate, to the rhythmic music of Brazil.

The Student Matinee Series begins in the fall with HAHN-BIN, a virtuosic young violinist who adds elements of theatre and surprise to his recitals. The Grammy® Award-winning musicians of the Luciana Souza Trio perform ¡Viva Brazil! and demonstrate the rich Brazilian cultural heritage by blending traditional and contemporary Brazilian jazz, world and pop music. YAMATO: The Drummers of Japan tour globally with giant drums to share their gift of Taiko drumming and Japanese music in a Stomp-like show that is often humorous and interactive.

In the spring, the Series picks up with Norman Corwin’s The Rivalry, a riveting radio-play portrayal of Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas’ senatorial debate, produced by L.A. Theatre Works. Cirque meets dance as Diavolo Dance Theater combines gymnastics, athletics, dance, and theatre with high energy and large props. Finally, the internationally known Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet performs Act I of Moulin Rouge®-The Ballet, a storybook ballet with new choreography based on Paris’ legendary Moulin Rouge featuring rich classical music, traditional ballet movement and even a cancan!

Because we know and appreciate how important it is to plan and identify field trips as educational experiences, we are happy to provide curriculum connections and activities related to these shows for your use below.  Please note that with this year’s Norton Center Student Matinee Series, prices have been reduced to reach even more youth throughout our region. Also, Norton Center staff is happy to assist educators with planning pre- or post-performance lunches on campus.
